Prior to initiation of this practice, management of student behavior was the primary concern and staff morale was low. Students required isolation, restraint, and removal to control behavior, and made little progress academically. Teachers reported the environment as chaotic and dreaded coming to work.
During the 2003-2004 school year the PBIS initiative began with the following key elements:
- Administrative Support
- Selection of a Team
- BOE Presentation
- Budget Allocation
- Team Developed School-Wide Rules and Expectations
- Created the “Good Choice Circle” Program
- Developed a plan for staff training
- Developed a plan to teach expectations to the students
